The Pangeia Instrumentos are acoustic musical instruments, sound devices and installations designed and built through a process of experimentation with design, sound and music. The main focus of Gama's work as a composer is the phenomenon of metamorphosis and evolution of musical instruments that span the period from pre-history to our days. This phenomenon suggests that form is a variable in the composition process and is intrinsically related to the player's inner creative impulse and his closest material and spiritual environment.
By introducing the construction of the instrument into the writing process, new variables are added and become part of the piece being composed such as form, the properties of materials, sound, playing technique as well as performance and movement. In Pangeia Instrumentos, the notion of object is used as a form of writing. Thus, the exercise of "giving form" or "writing through form" becomes central in Gama's composition work. Through this process he has created modes of writing through form called the Golian Modes.
The Pangeia Instrumentos exhibition is a space where the visitor is encouraged to actively engage and interact with the work on display. The exhibition is meant to turn the gallery into a performance space and the visitors into performers. The works include a collection of over twenty pieces among musical instruments, sound devices and sound installations. Visitors are frequently asked to participate in recordings throughout the show. A whole educational program is generally implemented with workshops for all age groups, talks, games and in gallery performances.
